The events from book one transition logically and smoothly into the sequel. A huge pet peeve of mine is reading a series and feeling utterly confused between the new book and its predecessor - either the transition is abrupt and confusing, or there's this information DUMP regarding the previous novel. Her friends are loyal and are there to lend their strength. The heroine is strong and level insightful and refuses to be taken down without a fight. This adventure continues to thrill and excite. Will Maray survive the conflict of her new world? And will she and Jemin find a way to overcome the stigma that comes from her swiftly developing feelings for someone "below her station?" But it seems even Jemin is not safe from those who wish to destroy the chances of Rhia's return. The danger in Maray's world is all too real, so Maray must return to Alinan to continue her training and, hopefully, spend time with the one person she misses most from that world, Jemin. But Maray's mother must lay claim to the crown before Rhia returns and all is lost. There is nowhere in either world where she is safe. In those moments I felt like shaking her and reminding her there was so much more at stake than just Jemin, his beautiful eyes and velvet kisses! ![]() For example: "As she was still pondering whether she would ever get to kiss Jemin again. She only cared about saving him, thinking about how she'd miss looking into his eyes or kissing him, until near the end of the book. She thought only about her love interest and his kisses while forgetting about everything else - her duties, the rest of her family, her people. While I understand that this is a YA novel, I felt like Maray was immature. I will be honest in saying that I was mildly annoyed with her. We follow Maray as she not only confronts her foes but learns to control her magic and comes to the realization that she has more at stake that her life - there are those she loves, and the future of her people and her world.Īction packed nearly from the get go and yet I felt this book was a little harder for me to get through, likely due to Maray's inner monologue. A group of revolutionaries are intent on killing Maray before her evil grandmother is able to steal her magical blood and when they think they've finally resolved that problem, a surprise visitor resurfaces and foils their plans. Reunited with her mother, Maray and her family plan their return to Allinan to try to gain support from the court against Rhia, only they're not sure who they can trust.
